The Bible, the Prime Minister and Global Warming The end-of-time cannot come about until the biblical Israel, at its zenith, before the Babylonian Diaspora, is recreated. This piece of Evangelical dogma may not only explain Prime Minister Harper's steadfast support of an expansionist Jewish State, but his government's decisions concerning the environment; decisions that can only increase the likelihood that the human race will shortly be joining T-Rex in the fossil record. One of the Prime Minister’s first order of business, after being re-elected with a majority, was to initiate further reductions in expenditures related to the study of global warming and the disappearing ozone. These are, of course, completely frivolous expenditures if you believe the end is near. And, if you believe the end is near, what is wrong with doing what you can to gain maximum benefit from God's bounty while there is still time. So what if your voracity increases the likelihood of a runaway greenhouse effect, with the temperature of the earth's atmosphere continuing to rise until it reaches a temperature comparable to Venus and killing all life on the planet. Maybe global warming is part of God's plan to bring about the end of His Creation, and you are only doing your part to make it happen. Stephen Harper is not a stupid man. He has to know that the reckless mining of the Tar Sands for oil, with the staggering amount of greenhouse gases this generates, greatly increases the likelihood the temperature of the air we breath will become hot enough, perhaps in less than a generation, if its a runaway effect, to cook a turkey on Thanksgiving Day. It bears repeating! Stephen Harper believes in the Book of Revelation and the predictions it contains about the end of times. He also believes that he will be Raptured* i.e. float up to heaven, if he is not already there, when things heat up, both literally and figuratively. If he, and like-minded Evangelicals (Christians who believe that the Bible is the literal Word of God and act accordingly) have nothing to fear from their Savior bringing an end to His Creation, why should he worry about the rest of us. The world is starting to push back against another man whose religious convictions threaten widespread destruction and death. They may have to push harder if we are to avoid a global catastrophe where biblical scale will be inadequate to describe the devastation. --------- * The Rapture as described in The Evolution of God (Little, Brown and Company, 2009) by author Robert Wright: This idea rest on a dubious interpretation of Paul's letter to the Thessalonians, in which he describes how, upon Christ's arrival, first the resurrected dead, and then the still-living will rise into the sky: "the Lord ... will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever." Bernard Payeur, June 25, 2011
